Tura, Nokrek and Balpakram, the Garo Hills circuit of Meghalaya

Tura, the western base

Tura is the Garo Hills’ main town, under the shadow of Tura Peak, a forested climb with views across the Bangladesh plains on clear days. The town has the region’s only real hotels, markets and transport links (~4–5h from Guwahati by road; buses and Sumos run daily). Everything in the Garo circuit radiates from here.

Nokrek Biosphere Reserve

A UNESCO-noted biosphere an hour from Tura, protecting the wild ancestor of citrus under canopy forest tracked by hoolock gibbons and rare macaques. Visits are forest walks with local guides and forest-department formalities, it’s a biosphere, not a zoo. The Daribok Gre area is the community-tourism face of the reserve.

Balpakram National Park

South Garo Hills, a day’s drive from Tura: a plateau-end canyon the Garo call the land of perpetual winds, where spirits are said to rest. Plateau cliffs, deep gorges, hoolock gibbons, plus near-zero tourist traffic. Facilities are basic; entry formalities are light but go through the forest department; go with local operators from Baghmara or Tura.

The 3–4 day circuit

Day 1: Guwahati → Tura (half day), Tura Peak sunset if legs allow.
Day 2: Nokrek forest walk + Daribok Gre, night in Tura.
Day 3: Tura → Baghmara → Balpakram plateau, the Siju caves on the way if running.
Day 4: back toward Guwahati, or continue to Wari Chora canyon country (guide).

The honest notes
