Nongriat and the Double Decker Root Bridge, trek difficulty, steps and staying over
Quick answer: The Nongriat trek is roughly 3,000–3,500 stone steps down (and back up) through rainforest to the famous Double Decker Living Root Bridge, a solid half-day round trip from Tyrna/Sohra side, better as an overnight in Nongriat village. Difficulty: moderate; beginners do it daily. The extension to Rainbow Falls adds 2–3 hours each way and is the part people remember most.
The steps, honestly
Count varies by where you start (Tyrna is the usual trailhead; some walk down from Sohra via Mawsama). Plan for 3,000+ steps down, which sounds fine until the return. Knees notice; walking poles help; take the swim stops the pools offer. Fitness bar: if you can walk downhill for 90 minutes and climb back, you can do this.
One day or overnight?
A day trip (down, bridge photos, swim, up) works from Sohra if you start by 8am. Overnighting in Nongriat is the superior trip: the day-trippers leave by 4pm and the village goes silent, you get the bridges at dawn, the natural pools to yourself, and time for Rainbow Falls without rushing. Homestays in Nongriat are simple (basic rooms, home-cooked food) and book out in season, reserve a day or two ahead.
Rainbow Falls
From Nongriat, another couple of hours along the stream to a tall fall you can stand under in winter’s low water. Do it if knees and daylight allow; carry water and a snack, there’s little en route. Network is patchy down there; tell your host your plan.
Practical notes
- Best season: October–April. Monsoon makes the steps slick and the falls furious (beautiful, treacherous).
- Carry: water, snacks, cash (village stays take cash), a dry bag for phones, decent shoes, the steps are stone and often wet.
- Guides: not mandatory; the path is well-worn. A local guide adds stories and supports the village economy.
- Respect: Nongriat is a living village, not a park exhibit, quiet hours, no litter, ask before portraits.
