Jowai travel guide, Krang Shuri, Phe Phe Falls and the Nartiang Monoliths
Quick answer: Jowai, the Jaintia Hills’ headquarters, ~2 hours east of Shillong, is Meghalaya’s quieter side: Krang Shuri’s turquoise pools, the multi-tier Phe Phe Falls, and the Nartiang Monoliths, one of the largest collections of standing stones in India. One night in Jowai covers it all without rushing; day-trippers from Shillong see half of it.
What you’re coming for
- Krang Shuri Falls, a wide, stepped cascade over impossibly blue-green pools; swim-friendly in the dry months, furious in monsoon. The camps near the falls are the reason to stay the night.
- Phe Phe Falls, deeper into the forest, a longer walk, fewer people; the quietest fall in the Jaintia Hills.
- Nartiang Monoliths, hundreds of menhirs raised by the Jaintia kings centuries ago; walk the field and touch stones older than most nations. The Durga temple beside them carries a working legacy of the Jaintia kingdom.
- Jowai town itself, the Thadlaskein lake and the little cafes of a real hill town, not a resort strip.
How to reach
Shillong → Jowai is ~2 hours by shared cab or private car; buses run too. The falls around it need local cabs, this is shared-cab country for the spine, hired wheels for the last miles (Meghalaya without a car).
How many days?
One night, two days is the honest answer: arrive by noon, Krang Shuri swim + evening at the falls camps, next morning Phe Phe or Nartiang, out by afternoon. Monsoon turns everything dramatic and slippery; October–April is the walking-friendly season.
The honest note
Jowai’s tourism is younger than Sohra’s, signage is thin, guides are informal, cash matters. That’s the charm and the friction. Pair it: Sohra → Jowai → Dawki makes a clean Meghalaya triangle (the state guide). Custom Jaintia legs alongside our Nagaland trips, WhatsApp us.
