The Angami Tribe

At the Hornbill Festival: The Angami morung is the festival’s warmest welcome, and their log drums and cream-and-red shawls anchor the southern end of the arena.
Traditional dress and craft
Angami men wear the white lohe shawl with black-and-red bands; women wrap the blue-and-black mechanized-strip mekhela with cowrie work. Pipes, horns and the thekra singing style are theirs.
What to know about the Angami
The Angami are Kohima’s own people: terraced farmers, the community that banned hunting in Khonoma, and hosts of Sekrenyi, the great purification festival each February.
