Jatinga is a small Jaintia village on a ridge above Haflong, known for a strange, real phenomenon: on foggy, moonless nights between September and November, disoriented migrating birds descend toward village lights. Science explains orientation failure in the weather; the mystery in the popular imagination remains.
The state’s Jatinga Bird Festival (the 2026 calendar lists November 8-9) runs viewing, culture and food.
