Sivasagar was the capital of the Ahom kingdom that ruled the Brahmaputra valley for six centuries. The sights cluster around the great Sivasagar tank: Rang Ghar, the royal pavilion, Talatal Ghar, the multi-storey palace at Rangpur, and Shiva Dol, one of the tallest Shiva temples in India.
Charaideo, the Ahom royal burial ground with its mound maidams (UNESCO-listed), is a short drive out.
