Manas sits where the Assam plains meet the Bhutan Himalaya: a 500 sq km national park, a Tiger Reserve since 1974 and a World Heritage Site since 1985, with more than 20 endangered species listed by Assam Tourism. The Manas river is the border with Bhutan.
It sees a fraction of Kaziranga’s crowds. Safaris track rhino, wild buffalo and the golden langur, an endangered primate found almost only here; birders come for the Bengal florican. The best season is November to April.
