By air
Fly to Dimapur, Nagaland's only airport, via Kolkata or Guwahati. Festival week is the busiest week of the year for these small routes — book as early as you can. From the airport it is 74km — about 3 hours — up the hill to Kohima.
By train
Dimapur is the region's railhead, with connections through Guwahati to Kolkata and the wider network. Overnight options exist from both cities.
By road
From Guwahati, Kohima is roughly 340km — a full mountain day. Shared taxis run Dimapur → Kohima regularly outside festival week; during December 1–10 they are fought over, and a booked transfer is worth every rupee.
Festival week rules
- Traffic to Kisama builds from mid-morning — leave early, the morning arena programme is the reward.
- ATMs strain in festival week — withdraw cash in Dimapur on the way in.
- Stays in Kohima book out — sort yours by October (our stays guide helps).
Every Hornbill package we run includes Dimapur transfers and festival-day transport timed to the programme.
